Which sensor can I use with sleep² and how do I get one?

sleep² is compatible with the Polar Verity Sense wristband and the Polar H10 chest strap. Both sensors can be purchased at a discount via the app (-10%). With sleep², we ask you directly in the app whether you are interested in a sensor, as only this ensures the highest measurement accuracy in our studies (Topalidis et al., 2023a, 2023b). You can also order a sensor at any time independently of this by going to "Sensors" in the settings. If you already have one of these two POLAR sensors, you can of course use it and do not need to buy a new one. Alternatively, you can also import your sleep data from all supported wearables into sleep² from the Apple Health app. In the future, synchronisation with Google Fit will also be possible. How do I connect my sensor to sleep²?

After you have tapped on the orange "Go to sleep" item at the bottom of the screen in the app, simply follow the instructions. Another option is to tap on "Sensors" in the settings and then pair there and follow the instructions. Before each use, please make sure that your sensor is switched on (Verity Sense) or has skin contact (H10) and Bluetooth is activated. In order for Bluetooth to find your sensor in the environment, it may also be necessary to activate the location services or location on your smartphone. If your smartphone sends a pairing request, please authorise it to pair successfully. As we only store all data locally on the sensor and without any active wireless connections, you can switch your smartphone to flight mode as soon as the connection has been established in the evening before going to bed. Make sure to re-establish all connections (i.e. flight mode off, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on) before reading out the data in the morning.

How do I put on my sensor correctly?

Polar Verity Sense: The VS wristband is best worn directly on the upper arm so that the green glowing sensor rests on the inside under your bicep. Polar H10: The H10 sensor should surround the ribcage directly under the chest. It should fit snugly but not be uncomfortably tight and the sensor part containing the battery should ideally be placed in the centre front of the chest so that it does not pinch. What can I do if my sensor cannot be paired?

In some cases, problems may occur when pairing the sensor, especially at the beginning. Please ensure that your sensor is switched on (Verity Sense) or has skin contact (H10) and Bluetooth is activated. In order for Bluetooth to find your sensor in the environment, it may also be necessary to activate the location services or location on your smartphone. Please do not connect your Polar sensor directly in the smartphone settings, but only in sleep². It may also help to deactivate other Bluetooth devices in the vicinity as many Bluetooth devices sometimes cause connection problems. If your smartphone sends a pairing request, please authorise it once. If problems persist, you can also try unpairing the sensor in the sleep² settings and deleting or "ignoring" it in the Bluetooth settings of your smartphone. Then try pairing again exclusively via the sleep² app. With the H10 sensor, you can also try removing the battery from your Polar strap and then reinserting it. If this does not solve the problem, reset the H10 sensor by removing the battery and touching the two metal push buttons on the sensor with your fingers for 10 seconds. Then wait briefly and reinsert the battery. Finally, it may also be helpful to update the firmware of your Polar sensor here (https://support.polar.com/at-de/support/) and then pair your sensor again in sleep².

What do I have to pay attention to so that the data from last night can be read out?

It is important that you are still wearing the sensor (the H10 switches off as soon as it loses contact with your skin) or that it is switched on (Verity Sense). If you have been asleep in flight mode, wait a few seconds until you have a stable Internet and Bluetooth connection again and only then click on the "Wake up" icon. If you still have difficulties, try closing the sleep² app ("wipe away") and restarting it, and also switch the sensor completely off and on again. Don't worry, your data will not be lost as it is stored locally on the sensor. What can also help is to deactivate and reactivate Bluetooth on your smartphone and move to a place where there are fewer Bluetooth devices in the vicinity.

Why is the “get up” button greyed out?

This can happen when there is no stable internet connection. Make sure your smartphone has a good internet connection, for example, check for good reception, and then try again.

Where can I see the battery status of my sensor?

If you click on the orange "Go to sleep" icon with the moon in the app, your Polar sensor will be connected and you will see the battery status light up at the bottom of the screen. You will receive a warning in the evening (with Verity Sense) as soon as you have a battery status of 60%; if you fall below 50%, you have to charge your Verity Sense sensor briefly (usually only 20 minutes) to have enough battery capacity for one night. We therefore recommend that you simply plug in your Verity Sense every 2nd night and charge it for 1-2 hours, so you always have full capacity and are sure that no data is lost. By the way, the H10 sensor has an external battery and lasts for many weeks; we will warn you in sleep² when you reach the capacity limit to replace the battery.

Do I have to turn the sensor on or off to save battery power?

Polar H10: No, the Polar sensor turns on automatically when there is contact with the skin and turns off again when contact is lost. Polar Verity Sense: Yes, the sensor does not switch on/off automatically. If you want to switch the sensor on, briefly click on the button on the sensor (lights on). If you want to switch your sensor off, press and hold the button on the sensor (light off).

How can I zoom in the app?

In the general settings of your smartphone, you can activate the zoom or "magnifying movement" under "Operating aids" or "Input aids".

How to import data from Apple Health and Google Fit

If you want to import data from Apple Health (or soon Google Fit) into sleep², go to the sleep² settings and first activate the green button for Apple Health or Google Fit access. You will then be redirected to the Apple Health app (or Google Fit app), where you must explicitly authorise sleep² to read data. If you use a smartwatch or other sensors (such as Polar Verity Sense / H10), you must first allow Apple Health (or Google Fit) to record your sleep and store it in Apple Health (or Google Fit). Every morning it is then important to make sure that you first synchronise the data from these external devices with Apple Health (or Google Fit) before you click on the "Wake up" icon or start the diary in sleep². For Apple Watch (with watchOS ≥9; Watch SE, Series 4 or newer) products and the Oura ring, in addition to sleep duration and time to get in and out of bed, we also take the three sleep phases (lead sleep/core sleep, deep sleep and dream sleep/REM) and display this data wherever we can do so sensibly. You get the most detailed and accurate evaluation with our sensors and in-house developed and internationally published algorithms that have been trained on more than 9000 sleep lab nights (Topalidis et al., 2023a, 2023b). Is there any evidence that sleep² works and improves my sleep?

Of course! This is precisely one of sleep²'s strengths. As a spin-off of the University of Salzburg, we prioritise the scientific nature and continuous accompanying research and improvement of sleep training and sleep analysis.
